Spreydon was mostly swamp and tussock before Augustus Moore bought 300 acres along Lincoln Road in 1853 and named it Spreydon Farm. The area began to grow around the turn of the 20th century, and by 1911, when Spreydon became a borough, the farm had been heavily subdivided.
Spreydon merged into the city in 1921 and is now an established suburb. Our work here includes updating older switchboards, replacing aged wiring, adding heat pump and kitchen circuits and LED lighting upgrades.
Common Home Types in Spreydon
Much of Spreydon was subdivided early in the 20th century, so some homes are old enough to have rubber-insulated cable, which should be replaced rather than extended. Other homes have plastic-sheathed wiring on boards that lack full RCD protection or spare space. The former Spreydon Lodge, one of the oldest houses remaining in south-western Christchurch, is a scheduled heritage place.
What Spreydon Conditions Mean for Your Wiring
The area was swampland before it was developed, and NIWA notes frost is most likely on flat ground where cold air cannot drain away, so winter heating runs long. Clean Air Zone rules limit wood burners, so heat pumps need dedicated circuits and the board needs capacity. Barrington Shopping Centre and the Pioneer Leisure Centre bring commercial work to the suburb.

Electrician Spreydon FAQs
Does my older Spreydon home need rewiring?
Only if testing shows it. Rubber-insulated cable should be replaced, while sound plastic-sheathed wiring can usually stay.
Can you add a heat pump circuit?
Yes, if the board has a spare way and capacity. If not, we quote a board upgrade alongside it.
Can you upgrade my old halogen downlights to LED?
Yes. We replace halogens with LED downlights and check the transformers, dimmers and insulation clearances as we go.
Do you work on shops near Barrington?
Yes. We handle lighting, repairs, maintenance and test and tag for local businesses.
