Most people begin with the cable that came with the car, plugged into an ordinary socket. WorkSafe notes these supply up to 10 A, enough to top up a smaller battery overnight but slow for a large one. A wall charger is quicker, safer for daily use and can be told to charge at the cheapest time of night.
We install home chargers in garages, carports and driveways across Christchurch, Selwyn and Waimakariri. Before choosing a unit, read our guide to the best home EV chargers in NZ.

What WorkSafe's guidelines require
WorkSafe's EV charging safety guidelines set out how a home charger must be installed. Each charging point needs its own dedicated final subcircuit. Under the 3rd edition addendum, that circuit must be protected by a Type B RCD and must start from a switchboard on a MEN (multiple earthed neutral) system. A Type A RCD paired with an RDC-DD to IEC 62955 is an accepted alternative.
Two points trip people up. A Type B RCD built into the charger does not replace the protection required on the circuit. And WorkSafe's consumer guidance says the Type A RCDs already common in houses do not cover every fault an EV or its charger can create. A wall-mounted unit has to be installed by a registered electrician.
- Dedicated final subcircuit for each charger
- Type B RCD, or Type A plus an RDC-DD to IEC 62955
- Circuit fed from a MEN switchboard
- Registered electrician and a Certificate of Compliance
Switchboards in Christchurch homes
A charger is among the biggest loads a house will carry, often for hours at a stretch. WorkSafe warns that older wiring may need upgrading because high-draw devices generate heat. In Christchurch that load often arrives alongside another: as older wood burners reach the end of their permitted life under Environment Canterbury's Clean Air rules, a household that retires one may turn to electric heating, so the same board can end up feeding a heat pump and a car.
We check the board, the main supply and your existing load at the quote stage, so you know up front whether a switchboard upgrade is needed. Our guide on whether you need a switchboard upgrade for an EV charger covers the common signs. Doing both jobs in one visit saves a second call-out.
How It Works
Charge when the network is quiet
Orion, which runs the lines network across Christchurch, Selwyn and Banks Peninsula, describes its rush hours as very cold winter mornings and evenings, when heaters, ovens and hot water all run at once. Plugging the car in at 6pm on a frosty July night adds to that peak. A smart charger can wait until later in the night, and if your retail plan has a cheaper night rate, it can start when that rate begins.
Gen Less says smart wall chargers are at least three times faster than a 3-pin plug, and can load balance, turning down automatically when the rest of the house is busy. That protects the main supply in homes with older wiring. EECA publishes a list of recommended smart chargers chosen for efficiency and grid smartness.
- Scheduled overnight charging
- Load balancing against the rest of the house
- App control and usage history
- Room to add solar charging later
Single-phase, three-phase and which lines company
Most houses have single-phase supply, which caps a home charger at around 7 kW. Three-phase allows more, but few houses have it and not every car can use it. We tell you plainly whether a bigger unit would actually charge your car faster.
Your lines company depends on where you live. Christchurch, Rolleston and Lincoln are on Orion's network. North of the Waimakariri River, including Rangiora, Kaiapoi and Pegasus, the network belongs to MainPower. If you later add solar, the export rules differ between the two, as our solar installation page explains.
Buy a charger that is legal here
EV supply equipment is a medium-risk declared article, so New Zealand suppliers must hold a Supplier Declaration of Conformity (SDoC). WorkSafe suggests asking for a copy before you buy and passing it to your electrician. If a seller cannot provide one, do not install the unit until its safety is confirmed.
WorkSafe also warns against chargers and cables made for overseas supply systems and fitted with a New Zealand plug. A test and tag label does not make modified EV gear safe, because AS/NZS 3760 is written for tools and leads. Never use double adaptors or multi-boxes with a charging cable.
Where the charger goes
Distance from the switchboard to the parking spot, and the route between them, drive most of the price. A charger on the garage wall beside the board, common in newer homes in Halswell, Wigram and Northwood, is straightforward. A carport across the section may need a trench, conduit and a unit rated for frost and weather. EECA notes you cannot run a charging cable across a public footpath to a car parked on the street.
We mount the charger at a sensible height, near where the car's charge port ends up, with the cable able to reach without stretching across a path.

EV Charger Installation FAQs
Do I need a Type B RCD for an EV charger?
WorkSafe's guidelines require the charger circuit to have a Type B RCD, or a Type A RCD with an RDC-DD to IEC 62955. A Type B RCD inside the charger does not replace that circuit protection.
Can I keep charging from a normal socket?
Yes, with the manufacturer's cable plugged straight into the socket. WorkSafe says these supply up to 10 A. Never use an extension lead or double adaptor.
When is the best time to charge in Christchurch?
Overnight, away from the peaks. Orion's network is busiest on very cold winter mornings and evenings. A smart charger can be set to start later, or when your plan's night rate begins if it has one.
Will I need a switchboard upgrade?
Sometimes. Old fuse boards, full boards and boards with no RCDs often need work first. We check this at the quote stage.
Is Rangiora on the same network as Christchurch?
No. Rangiora, Kaiapoi and Pegasus are on MainPower's network. Christchurch city, Rolleston and Lincoln are on Orion.
What paperwork do I get?
A Certificate of Compliance for the new circuit, plus the charger warranty and setup details. Keep the supplier's SDoC with them.
