Every grid-tied system needs approval from the local lines company before it is livened. Across most of Christchurch and Selwyn that is Orion, which asks for an inverter that meets AS/NZS 4777 and caps what a single-phase home can export. North of the Waimakariri River the network belongs to MainPower, which has its own rules. We prepare the application for whichever network supplies your Hoon Hay property.

Hoon Hay Valley and Suburban Streets: Two Ways to Do Solar

Hoon Hay has two faces: suburban streets of homes from several decades, and a semi-rural edge bordered by farmland and the Hoon Hay valley at the foot of the Port Hills. Solar is planned differently on each. On the suburban streets the job is a standard rooftop array, with the board and its RCD protection tested first, because house ages vary a lot from one street to the next.

On larger semi-rural blocks, the house roof is not the only option. A shed, workshop or open ground can carry panels where the house roof is shaded or faces the wrong way. The catch is distance: the cable from the array back to the switchboard has to be sized for the run, protected along its route and, if buried, laid at the correct depth. DC cabling stays live whenever the sun is up, which is one reason we keep those runs as short as practical and fit isolation where the rules require it.

Homes in the valley and on the newer hillside sections can lose sun to the slopes around them, more so in winter, so shading is checked from the actual site. The Cashmere Stream runs down the valley and through the suburb, and any ground-level equipment near it is kept on higher ground. Residents were evacuated in the 2017 Port Hills fires, and outage risk is one reason some owners ask about battery backup. Orion supplies Hoon Hay and approves the connection.

Local tip: If you have a shed with a clear north roof, compare it with the house roof before choosing where the panels go.

Solar Installation in Hoon Hay: Local Conditions

South and Port Hills homes range from bungalows under big trees in Beckenham to hillside houses in Cashmere and new builds in Halswell. Hills and trees change the early and late sun, so shading is mapped before we recommend panels.

Clear, frosty winter days still produce useful output, but the sun sits low and the days are short.

Homes in Hoon Hay

Hoon Hay's suburban streets hold homes of several ages, so we test the board and RCD protection before adding new circuits. Larger semi-rural properties may have sheds or workshops that need a sub-main from the house, with the right cable size and protection for the distance. Newer homes on the hills have modern boards but steeper access.

Residents of the Hoon Hay Valley were evacuated during the 2017 Port Hills fires and allowed back to their properties on 22 February.

Our electricians are in and around Our Lady of the Assumption School and Hoon Hay valley and the rest of Hoon Hay most weeks. For everything else, see electricians in Hoon Hay.

How We Handle Solar Installation in Hoon Hay

On install day the panels are mounted, the inverter goes in a sheltered spot and the system is wired to your board. Roof penetrations are sealed and cables are run tidily.

Pricing: a free quote and a fixed price agreed before we start. You get a written, itemised quote, and small jobs can be quoted from photos.

Solar Installation Hoon Hay FAQs

Can I put solar on my shed in Hoon Hay instead of the house?

Yes, if the shed roof is sound and gets good sun. The cable back to the house board is sized for the distance and protected along its route, and that cost is shown in the quote.

How much power can I export to the grid?

On Orion's network a single-phase home can export up to 5 kW. MainPower sets a default export limit of 10 kW for small customers, lower on some constrained connections. We design within the limit for your connection.

Which lines company approves my system?

Orion covers Christchurch, Selwyn and Banks Peninsula. MainPower covers the area north of the Waimakariri River, including Rangiora, Kaiapoi and Pegasus. We prepare the application for the right one.
