Belfast grew as a separate town around Canterbury's first meat-freezing works, which began operating in February 1883. It sits about 10 km from Cathedral Square on the northern edge of the city, close to the Waimakariri River, and was once known as Seven Mile Peg.
Its population grew 21% between 2006 and 2013, partly because the earthquakes caused only minor liquefaction and little damage here. Our Belfast work covers older homes, new housing and the industrial and commercial sites along Main North Road.
Common Home Types in Belfast
Belfast's older homes reflect its long history as a separate town, while newer housing has come with recent growth, including Northwood, developed from 2000 as a subdivision of Belfast on former orchards. Older homes may have original fuse boards without RCD protection, while new homes have modern boards with room for EV chargers and extra circuits.
What Belfast Conditions Mean for Your Wiring
The ground here came through 2010 and 2011 with only minor liquefaction, so quake damage is less of a factor than in the east. Belfast's industrial land brings three-phase power, machinery circuits, lighting and test and tag work. Winter frosts and Clean Air Zone burner rules put more heating onto heat pumps, and the board needs to cope. Belfast is on the Orion network, unlike Kaiapoi across the river, which is on MainPower.
