Kaiapoi, the River Town, sits about 17 kilometres north of central Christchurch near the mouth of the Waimakariri River, with the Kaiapoi River running through its centre. The 2010 earthquake did enormous damage to its infrastructure, and more than 900 homes in Kaiapoi and The Pines Beach were abandoned because of land damage.
The population dipped after 2011 but has since grown rapidly, and red zone land is being reused under a recovery plan. Our Kaiapoi work includes testing repaired homes, switchboard upgrades, and EV chargers and solar for newer houses, all on the MainPower network.
Common Home Types in Kaiapoi
Kaiapoi has homes that came through the earthquakes with repairs and newer housing built during the recent growth. Repaired homes often mix new and original wiring, and older boards may lack RCD protection. New homes have modern boards ready for extra circuits.
What Kaiapoi Conditions Mean for Your Wiring
Land damage from the 2010 earthquake was severe here, and ground movement can stretch or break buried cables to garages and outdoor lights, so we test them before adding load. The Waimakariri flooded the town in 1868 and again in 1923, so outdoor sockets and pumps on low ground should be RCD protected and mounted clear of water. Kaiapoi is on MainPower, which approves solar up to 10 kW single phase, and Environment Canterbury's 20-year limit on low-emission burners applies here too.

MainPower, because Kaiapoi is north of the Waimakariri River.
How much solar can I export in Kaiapoi?
MainPower approves up to 10 kW single phase, with a default 10 kW export limit for small customers, lower where the network is constrained.
Can my Kaiapoi home take an EV charger?
