Wigram is named after Sir Henry Wigram, who set up a flying school here in 1916, and the first trans-Tasman flight landed here in 1928. After the aerodrome closed in 2009, Ngāi Tahu Property subdivided the land into Wigram Skies, with The Runway following the route of the old runway.
